History of the Buena Park Woman's Club

On March 9, 1889, a group of nine women met at the home of John Wright to perform sewing.  This was a relief effort for a family that had lost their possessions in a catastrophic fire. On March 23, 1889 the bylaws of the Buena Park Woman's Club were adopted. It is the second oldest Woman's Club in the state of California.

Federated with the General Federation of Woman's Clubs and the California Federation of Woman's Clubs in 1919.

Incorporated in 1924.

Our Spanish Revival Clubhouse was recognized as Orange County historical site 43 in September of 1994.

In 1910 the Buena Park Woman's Club had the first six street lights installed in Buena Park. In 1919 we established the Buena Park Library. With the help of husbands, sons and friends, we established the Buena Park Volunteer Fire Department. We were instrumental in forming the Park District, which created Bellis Park.

One of our current members was the first woman to sit on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls club.  At that time it was just the Boys Club.  There have been over 120 years of selfless community service. We have had over 80 amazing club Presidents.

Our Commitment
This is my club. It is composed of women like me. I make it what it is. I want it to be a club that is a path leading to growth, friendship, and achievement. It will be if I am. It will be friendly if I am. Its seats will be filled, if I help to fill them. It will do great work if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring many women into its fellowship, if I bring them. It will be a club of loyalty and love, of concern and courage, with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, I am filled with these. Therefore, with God’s help, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all of these things that I want my club to be!
